My favorite music on hold paragraph for the FW 11 season

As we wrap up writing and recording on-hold paragraphs for our customers, my favorite paragraph so far is from Cornelius Veterinary Clinic.  This paragraph totally rocks!  It’s informative, relevant, and fun.  Here you go:

Speaking of politics….Oh, not again!…. your pet doesn’t need a national health care plan— because you voted for the Cornelius Veterinary Clinic! Thank You! You already chose a plan that will take care of alltheir needs regardless of preexisting conditions, age, sex or breed, religion or party affiliation. If you love them enough to bring them in, we’re non-partisan enough to give them our very best every visit!

Voiceover by Dr. Bullard: “Hi I’m Dr. Bullard.  I love my job. I’m not retiring, and I support this message.”

What great paragraph, especially with the Voiceover at the end.  Want to hear it?  Call them up at 503-357-2525 and ask to get put on hold.

I’ll admit that we have a lot of companies that won’t go that far, they prefer a more “straight-laced approach” to their on-hold messaging… and we can do that music on hold too.  (Although, it’s not as fun.)

Cell phone in watery grave teaches a marketing lesson.

The pool in our new home had been unattended for nine months, and the liner was shot.  As the kids looked on longlingly at an empty pool  in the summer heat, Lisa and I bought and installed a new liner.

Liners are hard to install.  This is mine.

Then. I fell in clothes and all…great.  New Android phone in my pocket all wet.  NOT great.

a watery grave

I thought I was out a cell phone, but a little marketing done months earlier turned me into a new customer of Gary Mello.

1.  Gary cold calls in-person Stuff, one of our on-hold customers.

2.  Patrick’s cell phone goes for a swim.

3.  Patrick mentions it to Stuff’s owner.

4.  Patrick goes to Gary.

5.  Gary fixes phone for $40, saving me $450.

Interesting how a little word of mouth can travel so far!  The same is true in our businesses.  The owner of Stuff once wisely told me, ” Marketing works, you just don’t know which half.”

YOU have a solution; And if someone is looking for it a little marketing can go a long way!   Hold Time doesn’t promise to solve all your marketing problems, but we can guarantee that your best customers (the one’s who are calling you) will GET that message!

Comparing Hold Time prices with Muzak

Apples to Apples with Muzak

Hold Time Music is delighted to take on another multi-location client who was using Muzak.  The sale was easy - local in-person service, creative scripting, and 40% less (hello!) than what they were current paying Muzak for the same on-hold messaging service.

This was also one of our first installations in the local market using an internet appliance from Premier Technologies.   By digitally uploading productions to an on-site player, customers get

 - CD quality playback
 - on-the-fly changes, broad across multiple locations in as little as 10 minutes
 - one less device on their auxiliary fax line.

Although we’re 40% less on price, Hold Time Studios is 200% better on customer service and quality.   Learn more about us here, and read our testimonials from customers who have great on-hold!

Welcome to Automax!

Welcome to Automax!

 What they do:

Automax is Frank’s automotive repair shop in Canby, Oregon.  A couple of bays, and small enough so that Frank is involved with every vehicle, and so his on-hold productions include a lot of info on who he is, and encouraging the consumer to come back again… because repeat business is key to his sustainability.  Not unlike another Hold Time customer, Just Right Automotive in Frank started as a mechanic himself: first at a dealer, then in his garage, and when his garage got too small, at his current business location.

Marketing Challenges:

Many of our automotive clients have the same problem: getting the customer back for maintenance.  Come to think of it, dental offices have the same issue!

“Maintenance is always cheaper than repair,” mechanics say again and again.  To illustrate their point, they’ll tell you that most transmissions fail because of a lack of fluid maintenance, a simple change for under $100 could keep you from a transmission repair that costs $1000’s.

Here’s a good script we wrote for Automax:

IGNORING LIGHTS

YOUR VEHICLE IS TWO TO FIVE THOUSAND POUNDS, AND THE BRAKES ARE THE ONLY THING BETWEEN YOU AND A MAJOR CATASTROPHE… SO IF BRAKE LIGHT IS ON, PLEASE PAY ATTENTION… EVEN IF THE CAR IS STOPPING OKAY.  SOMEWHERE, THE SYSTEM IS FAILING, AND IT’S MOST LIKELY TO STOP WORKING AT ALL WHEN YOU REALLY STOMP ON IT IN AN EMERGENCY.   THE SAME GOES FOR A SOLID CHECK ENGINE LIGHT.  WITH OVER FIFTY SENSORS REPORTING IN YOUR VEHICLE RIGHT NOW, AUTOMAX OF OREGON IS READY TO DIAGNOSE AND GET YOU SAFELY ON YOUR WAY

These phones are terrible.

.  WE’LL BE RIGHT WITH YOU!

Equipment:

The chronic on-hold beep on his 4-line RCA Executive phone system was driving Frank crazy, and there is no way to turn it off.  Hold Time installed a special adapter and player to enable the hold option on this RCA system which masked the “beep”, but it wasn’t good enough.  And I really hate these systems anyway.  Automax eventually purchased a newer, nicer phone system.

Automax found Hold Time by way of direct referral from another Hold Time music on hold customer: CHS Machine, a machine shop in Portland that remanufactures old engines.

Gearing up for the Fall-Winter Season our Music on Hold clients

We’re gearing up for the Fall-Winter 2011 Turnover!  Most of our clients will be receiving on-hold scripts for the Fall-Winter 09 season in several days.   Hold Time will have written some new paragraphs for you, but only YOU know what your customer really needs to hear.

Here are some unique marketing ideas we’ve gotten from our clients in the last quarter that might help you sharpen up this affordable and effective market channel.

Please let us know which of these ideas work best for you company!

#1 Doing more for the customer.
Get them signed up!

We’ve seen many clients get smarter with their marketing because, frankly, they’re having to dig harder for new customers.

-          Print and Email Newsletters
-          Direct Mail
-          New or upgraded website

What are you doing to keep your customers coming back?  Tell them with Hold Time - that’s what we’re here for!

#2 “Live Local, Buy Local”

“Buying Local” has been an effective sales strategy lately, even for Hold Time.  As our main competitorMuzak is in bankruptcy and out-of-state, we’ve seen an uptick in unhappy businesses switching to Hold Time.

For your business consider:

 - “Live local, buy local” not only makes economic sense, it’s good for the environment too.
  - Can you match internet pricing on your product?
  - Do you offer selection or customization that your customer can’t get anywhere else?

Sometimes consumers don’t realize that smaller providers have better prices and better service than large competitors.

#3 Giving More for Less
Who wants LESS ice cream?

Don’t make this mistake: Dreyers Ice Cream has cut their standard ice cream packaging from 2 to 1.5 quarts in the last year, just when customers are demanding reduced or even free products in exchange for their loyalty.

Have you ever gotten your tire fixed for free?  That’s the service your customers are hoping to get when they call you today.  Let them know through Hold Time that you appreciate their loyalty.

This idea comes from Galvin Communications, which produces a very good marketing e-newsletter.

#4 You Are Accessible
People want to know you

If you’re in the same pond with a large competitor, you’ve got an advantage - your customers can talk to you.  Here’s an example:

“WE REALLY ARE HERE TO ANSWER ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS - AND FIELD YOUR SUGGESTIONS AND COMPLAINTS AS WELL.  IN FACT, WE’LL LET YOU TAKE IT STRAIGHT TO THE TOP AND TALK TO THE OWNER.  CAN YOU SAY THAT ABOUT OUR COMPETITORS?!  JUST EMAIL  KEITHV@YOURCOMPANY.COM , OR ASK TO SPEAK WITH KEITH WHEN WE RETURN TO THE LINE.”

This idea came from Keith, the Owner of Great Western Inks.

Hold Time would invite you take a look at our (true) Testimonials, and check the links on Phone System Compatibility for your phone system.  Our process includes per piece, and packages of productions to keep your music on hold relevant!  Learn about us at www.holdtimestudios.com

Hood to Coast Running Relay Review 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 10:34 pm

~ This was posted on - August 28, 2011

“A 30 hour traffic jam with three exciting 10k runs.” Three stars out of five.

I just finished running that Hood to Coast Relay Race this weekend, and it is the most epic sports event I’ve ever done. 15,000 runners relaying 200 miles from Timberline Lodge to Seaside, Oregon. Awesome runs were marred by a 30 hour long traffic jam.

A quick overview:

There are 1,250 teams of 12 runners each. The course is divided into 36 legs of five to eight miles, and each runner runs three legs spaced out by eight hours or so – two in the day, one at night. Teams were responsible for ferrying their runners to each check point to greet the incoming runner. Checkpoints were clearly marked, and innumerable volunteers staff the 200 mile course.  It’s the largest running relay race in the world.

The crowd was fun, and the runs were great; but it’s the 2,000 vans in traffic between checkpoints that will kill you.

Getting ready:

If you’re primed for a ½ marathon or ½ Ironman, this will be no problem. In my van there were people who were physically fit, but had not (ever) run more than six miles. They pulled through. Having completed an Ironman in 2010, and a Half this year, plus not being a particularly fast runner – completing Hood to Coast was easy. Also, what triathletes lack in speed they make up for in stamina, so when people were gassing out on the last of 3 legs, I was actually running faster than before.

Memorable Experiences:

#4: Reading all of the crazy (and sometimes inappropriate) team van decorations. My favorite: “If I pass out, please pause my Garmin.” Lots of references to beer and gender. Whereas triathletes are a fairly cognitive serious bunch, the runners here were pretty easygoing.

#3: Watching runners make their way up the coastal range in the middle of the night, with blinkies and reflective vests on, marching in the mist like ants to the coast.

#2: Being stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic for 30 hours with no sleep. This year, HTC added 250 teams creating traffic jam that was so bad, runners would get to the checkpoints before their team did. The last five miles of the race took three hours by car on a course that was obviously waaaay over capacity.   You can read angry complaints here. Because of the mind-numbing traffic, I would hesitate to do this race again.

#1: Discovering that I’m actually a decent runner compared to your Hood to Coast’er. Normally a back-of-the-pack guy on the running leg of a triathlon, I passed eight runners for every one that passed me on HTC. 8:1 – That’s a ratio I can live with!

A shout out to Integra Telecom, who let two Portland Triathlon Club members run on their teams. And to members of Portland Triathlon club: I think we should do this one some day!

The Portland economy, and free advertising on Google Maps

~ This was posted on - November 14, 2010

The Portland Economy: The word on the street:

So, every where I go I’m asking “What’s happening out there?” I got the best insight for longtime friend Jim Southwick, owner of Southwick Specialty Advertising.

“Patrick the promotional service industry is always the first in, and first out. ”

He explained that in the promotional items industry, the Great Recession really hit in early 2008, a few months in advance of the total seizure that we all saw in the last quarter of that year. Although the industry suffered being “first in” the economic downtown, the 2nd half of 2010 has been good all around…. hopefully this means the general uptrend we’re seeing will soon spread to all industries.

For Hold Time, the last two months have been very positive, lagging about three months behind Promotional Items… a good indicator to remember for the next cycle the music on hold industry goes through.  You might ask yourself, what external indicators is your business tied to?

Thanks everyone!

Can Customers Find You on Google Maps?

Dear (Contact First Name),

A friend and long-time client at Printsync asked me last week if I had registered my business on Google Maps.  Angela said that in the last six months, Printsync had picked up seven new customers from people searching for printers through Google Maps… and it’s free.  Hey, that’s worth trying!

Registering your business listing with Google Maps:

1.  Shows customers where you are, your phone number, and basic bio.

2.  Increases you web hits (a precious commodity in the marketing world)

3.  Increases your website’s organic ranking on Google.

4.  Let’s customers write reviews about you, which you should not fear if

your business is a good one.

4.  Why pass up free advertising?

keyword:portland music on hold
It’s free advertising, you might as well register!

So I registered two days ago, and Google Analytics tells me that 15 local queries have seen the Hold Time Music listing through this free Google Service.  Free free free!
